You have an essay due on Friday, a test coming up next week, a stressful weekend shift at work, basketball practices you can’t skip, and somehow need to spend time with your friends and family as well. How can you also prioritize time with Jesus?
We’ve all been there at varying levels. Whether it’s mostly due to school, work, or something else, the modern person’s schedule is often insanely busy. There’s things to get done, deadlines they need to be done by, and expectations from leaders and peers.
In the midst of all the busyness, it can be hard to know what to prioritize, and sadly, many start “falling behind” in the time they spend pursuing Christ. Reading your Bible sounds tiring after reading so much for school. Praying sounds exhausting after talking so much in meetings. Sitting in silence is easy to push away when you have a long to-do list.
But the second we lessen our time with Jesus, everything else loses its foundation.
You can put hours into preparing for a test, but when you get anxious, the study guides cannot replace the peace that only comes from Jesus. And you can throw yourself into working hard at your job, but striving for the raise or promotion will never match the life lived by finding fulfillment in Christ.
Now, I’m not saying that studying or working hard are bad things whatsoever–to live on earth, we need to learn and make money. What I am saying is that we should not be putting all of our time and identity into something that won’t last forever.
Juggling a busy schedule while also making time for your personal life and moments with Jesus is not an easy feat. It takes work, it takes desire, and it often takes sacrifice. But time spent with Jesus is never time wasted.
Though our schedules are filled to the brim, if you examine your time closely, you’ll realize your days have many “small moments” in them. The drive from home to work, getting ready in the morning, preparing food for dinner, relaxing before bed–all of these moments might seem small and insignificant, but you could be filling them with Jesus.
On the drive to work, what if you played a worship song? While getting ready for the day, what if you listened to a sermon? While preparing food for dinner, what if you prayed? When relaxing before bed, what if you opened your Bible and spent time reading or journaling through His Word?
The reality is that even with an insanely busy schedule, there are so many ways you can incorporate time with Jesus into your daily life. And sometimes, all it takes is one other person’s accountability to help you stick with your healthy habits. Go ahead and start a Bible study with a friend or join a group at your church!
I know it’s hard when your mind is filled with to-do lists, but you will be the best version of yourself when you slow down and turn your eyes to Him.
