This past Sunday morning, Champion Christian College lost not only a valued faculty member but also a cherished friend, mentor, and source of joy—Mr. Bill Gay, known affectionately to everyone as Mr. G.
Mr. G first joined the Champion family several years ago, bringing with him an infectious enthusiasm for history, literature, and life itself. He was recently hired full-time as the Chair of History and a Professor of History and English, continuing to pour his heart into every lesson and every student he met. In addition to his service at Champion, he also taught at National Park College, where his influence reached far beyond our campus.
At Champion, Mr. G’s presence was unmistakable. He was the voice of Champion baseball—and other sports as well—calling games with humor, energy, and a true love for the students he supported. Whether in the stands or the classroom, Mr. G was known for his laughter, encouragement, and unwavering dedication to the people around him.
Each year, Champion students host the Champys, a fun event where students create categories and vote for staff, faculty or peers who excell in a specific category. Mr. G was no stranger to recognition—he won Funniest Teacher, Most Valuable Fan, and Most Influential Teacher. His impact on the student body was undeniable, and his legacy will continue to echo in the halls, classrooms, and fields of Champion.
During a recent school assembly, students shared heartfelt memories that beautifully captured who Mr. G was. One student recalled how he made school fun, inspiring enthusiasm even in those who didn’t naturally love it. Another shared how Mr. G would take him out to eat, knowing his love for food and using it as a way to connect and care. One student summed up what so many felt: “I want to be like Mr. G. He gave me the drive and desire to learn and to become a better person.”
One verse that held special meaning to Mr. G was Proverbs 18:24:
“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”
It was a reflection of how he lived his life—full of friendship, generosity, and a faith that reached deeply into the lives of others. Mr. G showed himself friendly to all, and through that, became the kind of friend and mentor whose impact will be felt for years to come.
Mr. G’s teaching extended far beyond textbooks—he taught through kindness, laughter, and genuine love for others. His legacy will live on through every student he inspired, every game he cheered at, and every moment of joy he brought to the Champion.
Champion Christian College will continue to honor his legacy, both through the memories we share and through the lives he touched.
Thank you, Mr. G, for everything. You will be deeply missed, but your impact will never be forgotten.
